Our History
The organization was founded as the Literacy Council of Metropolitan Richmond in 1982 by Altrusa International of Richmond, a professional women’s business service club, and became incorporated as a not-for-profit in 1984. In 1995, the name was changed to The READ Center.
The READ Center is one of the leading adult literacy organization in Virginia, with a long-standing history of proven results. Each year, over 350 adult students benefit from READ Center programs.
