Read Center Narratives

“It’s amazing to work with students from so many different backgrounds who come to READ committed to learning and accomplishing their goals. It’s great to be a part of this organization.”
Josh, Volunteer Tutor

Volunteer Opportunities

You can make a significant impact by helping adults in our community learn to read.   There are many opportunities to volunteer with The READ Center in locations throughout the Greater Richmond area and in Southside Virginia.

Ways to Participate

It takes nearly 250 volunteers to help our students each year.

Volunteer Tutor:  Tutors receive eight hours of training and observe tutoring in a classroom setting before partnering one-on-one with an adult student. Experienced teachers are also available to support tutors as they work with their individual students. Tutors are asked to make a one-year commitment of 1-2 hours per week.

Support Staff: Help with data entry and other administrative tasks, answering phones and greeting visitors. The time commitment is flexible and office staff will train volunteers.

Speaker: Be an advocate for adult literacy and publicize READ programs by staffing exhibit tables at events, or speaking to civic groups, churches, corporations and other local organizations about our literacy programs.

Volunteer Teachers: Teachers work with a small group of students using the latest research-based methods and curriculum designed to meet the needs of adult learners.
