The READ Center A not-for-profit volunteer adult literacy program for adults 18 and older, serving the greater Richmond area, including Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, and Richmond City. Trained volunteer tutors work with adult learners to meet their individual literacy goals. Full Name: Reading and Education for Adult Development, Inc. Mission Statement: The mission of The READ Center is to help low-level reading adults develop basic reading and communication skills through one-to-one tutoring so they can fulfill their goals and their roles as citizens, workers, and family members. The READ Center is a United Way Program. History: Founded as the Literacy Council of Metropolitan Richmond in 1982 by Altrusa International of Richmond, a professional women’s business service club; became incorporated as a not-for-profit in 1984; name was changed in 1995 to The READ Center. Organization: The READ Center is governed by a Board of Directors. The READ Center program staff includes specialists in adult education, reading, and learning disabilities. What is literacy? The READ Center uses the following definition of literacy from The National Adult Literacy Survey of 1993: “Using printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential.” |
